Brentwood's Liberal Democrats have welcomed the change of heart made by the Conservatives running Brentwood Borough Council after they decided to scrap the introduction of a charge for parking in the Town Hall car parks on Sundays.

The Lib Dem team has been actively campaigning against the introduction of parking charges in the Town Hall car parks at weekends and over two hundred residents have already signed their petition calling for all the weekend charges to be scrapped.

The shock U-Turn was announced by the Leader Cllr Louise McKinley at last night's Annual Council meeting as an item of urgent business and was unanimously supported by all members.

Cllr David Kendall said:

"This is a great victory for the many local residents who use the Town Hall car park at the weekend to go shopping and go to Church. Many of them were very angry at the prospect of having to pay to park so they could worship.

"The Conservatives had little choice but to back down and make Sunday parking free after our sustained campaign against this move.

The Tories maintain that the car park is full at 8.30 am, but this picture was taken at 8.45am on Saturday 25th April 2009.

Cllr Barry Aspinell added:

"We will now continue with our campaign to get the parking charges scrapped on a Saturday and would urge any residents who support us to sign our petition on this site or at The Hair Company, 31 Crown Street."
